I’ve been creating art regularly for about five years. I started out at Crisis in East London. They had art classes for complete beginners and I learnt from their course.
The specific technique I have is I start painting elements that are furthest away, then progress forward.
The important thing to remember is that you can’t really go wrong with art. With painting, you can just go mad! If you don’t like it, just let it dry for a bit and paint over it. There’s no right or wrong with painting.
I like to paint animals and landscape pictures- I used to have a dog, and I love animals.
The best experience would be the time when I sold my art; a picture of Stormzy, at an online auction hosted by the Outpost. It was sold for £900 to a princess from Saudi Arabia!
The piece I’m the most proud of is called Hernia. The piece is inspired by Picasso’s piece Guernica, and it is a painting of a dog’s head on a huge spine floating in the desert with an ice cream cone.
Another piece I really like is a picture of a fluffy dog on an ice landscape. There’s a juxtaposition of the warm fluffy dog and the cold ice.
Art is therapeutic for me, and it allows me to be self-employed and earn an income. However, since the Covid-19 pandemic, I’ve been struggling to sell my art because most places are closed, and I’m on Universal Credit again. I hope things get better soon.
I joined the HomeLessMade artist collective because my friend Lui was a member and he told me I should join him. I used to go to another place in West London, but now I’m here!
I like music, and I play the piano and the guitar. I used to play with 5-6 people at a church, but now I play with one guy - he plays the guitar and I play the piano. We usually just play pop songs that have a groove to them.
Practice. There is no god-given ability - all artists struggle when they start out. We all start out not that great, but with practice you will get more patient and will improve. Having someone who will critique your art candidly is also very important.
In a way it is very similar to music. You need to get obsessed with it and practice to get good.
Music is my other hobby. I play the piano and the guitar.
